Fire, Anomaly DMG dealer

Phoenix from Zenless Zone Zero with a Kaption Polish subtitle
Polish subtitles for Zenless Zone Zero dialogue work today.

At a glance

Phoenix is a Fire Anomaly damage dealer who rewards a team for dealing Anomaly DMG. Her Core Passive: Nirvana puts enemies in Sear when any squad member deals Anomaly DMG, giving subsequent Anomaly damage against them a chance to critically hit.

Her own attacks build Pyre, which she spends on a finishing move. That move and her return after her Ultimate can trigger Abloom against enemies affected by an eligible Attribute Anomaly. She also has Perfect Blocks and several invulnerable attacks to help her stay in the fight.

Phoenix's Anomaly Proficiency increases by 85. When any squad member deals Anomaly DMG to an enemy, the enemy enters the Sear state for 20s. Repeated triggers reset the duration. When an enemy in the Sear state takes Anomaly DMG, the DMG has a chance to trigger a critical hit, with a base CRIT Rate of 30% and CRIT DMG of 25%. If Phoenix's initial Anomaly Mastery exceeds 155, each point above this threshold increases this effect's CRIT Rate by an additional 0.7%, reaching its maximum value when Phoenix's initial Anomaly Mastery reaches 255. Enemies in the Sear state take Fire DMG equal to 50% of Phoenix's ATK every 8s. This DMG is considered EX Special Attack DMG. During Combustion Attacks, Anti-Interrupt Level increases, and dealing DMG grants Pyre. Phoenix can have up to 120 Pyre. After Combustion Attacks, press to skip the backward retreat of Special Attack: Fire Sweep and EX Special Attack: Blazing Slash, and immediately follow up with the rising attack. When Phoenix takes fatal DMG, she will not be defeated and leave the field. Instead, Rebirth is triggered. The next time Phoenix enters the field through a normal switch-in, Quick Assist, or Defensive Assist, she recovers HP equal to 50% of her Max HP. When Phoenix uses an EX Special Attack, she enters the Wither and Bloom state for 20s. Hitting an enemy with a Combustion Attack or reapplying this state refreshes its duration. Guide

How the kit works

Start with Basic Attack: Sever Life. Its third and fourth hits are Combustion Attacks: dealing damage with them grants Pyre. After a Combustion Attack, you can skip the retreat on Special Attack: Fire Sweep or EX Special Attack: Blazing Slash (Special). Time the rising slash against an incoming attack or a red or yellow flash to trigger a Perfect Block.

With enough Energy, use EX Special Attack: Dazzling Flare (Special). Its follow-up, EX Special Attack: Falling Sun (Special), grants one Ascension, which you can spend on Blazing Slash. These attacks can lead into the third Basic Attack, getting you back to a Combustion Attack.

At 90 Pyre, hold the input for Basic Attack: Purifying Flame. Its finishing hit triggers Abloom against an enemy affected by Ice, Ether, Electric, Fire, Physical or Wind Anomaly. A critical hit from that Abloom gains an extra 40% CRIT DMG.

Ultimate: Perpetual Resurrection consumes all of Phoenix's HP and puts her in Wither, where she cannot perform active attacks. Soul-Searching Blaze activates automatically after a short period, or you can activate it quickly. On an eligible return to the field, it restores the HP consumed by the Ultimate plus 10% of Max HP and can trigger Abloom on its finishing hit.

Build and why

Use four pieces of Freedom Blues with two pieces of Phaethon's Melody. Freedom Blues gives Anomaly Proficiency and, when an EX Special Attack hits, reduces the target's Fire Anomaly Buildup RES by 20% for 8 seconds. The two-piece Phaethon's Melody gives 8% Anomaly Mastery. Four pieces of Chaos Jazz are an alternative, with 15% Fire DMG and a bonus to EX Special Attack and Assist Attack damage while off-field.

Put Anomaly Proficiency on disc 4, Fire DMG Bonus or Percent ATK on disc 5, and Anomaly Mastery on disc 6. Look for Anomaly Proficiency first and Percent ATK second in substats. Initial Anomaly Mastery above 155 raises the Sear Anomaly critical-hit rate, up to its maximum at 255.

Plume of Rebirth is the first weapon choice: it gives 90 Anomaly Proficiency and raises Fire DMG by 40% when squad Anomaly DMG critically hits. Angel in the Shell also gives 90 Anomaly Proficiency, but its other effect requires an Ether equipper, so Phoenix cannot use it. Electro-Lip Gloss is another option: an enemy with an Attribute Anomaly activates its ATK and damage bonuses.

Leveling priority

Follow the game's order: Core Passive: Nirvana first, then Basic Attack, Special Attack, Chain Attack, Assist and Dodge. The passive improves Phoenix's Anomaly setup, while Basic Attack covers the attacks she uses to gather and spend Pyre.

For maximum ascension, you need 800,000 Denny, 4 Basic Anomaly Certification Seal, 32 Advanced Anomaly Certification Seal and 30 Controller Certification Seal. Maxing all skills takes 2,905,000 Denny, 25 Basic Burn Chip, 75 Advanced Burn Chip, 250 Specialized Burn Chip, 5 Hamster Cage Pass, 9 Counterfeit Nucleus and 60 Higher Dimensional Data: Bloodstained Miasma Feather.

Mindscapes worth it

Notes From Confinement is worth considering for its damage effects: Phoenix ignores 15% All-Attribute RES, and her Abloom ignores 40% DEF. EX Special Attack: Dazzling Flare (Special) also grants Ascension.

Life's End and the Heartless Wonderland adds another Abloom with a fixed 600% multiplier when the relevant finishing moves hit an enemy with an Attribute Anomaly. Lingering Pain and Thrilling Procession gives Ascension on entry, improves Pyre generation and adds 25% Anomaly CRIT DMG against Sear enemies.

If you are choosing which upgrades to focus on, you can leave Scarecrow Complex and Carnival of Madness for later. Both add two levels to the main skill groups rather than adding a new mechanic.

Teams

Bring another Anomaly character or someone from Phoenix's faction to activate Additional Ability: Krampus Ace. It adds 15% Anomaly CRIT DMG against eligible enemies. Sear also helps the rest of the squad, since Anomaly DMG against affected enemies can critically hit.

Common mistakes

Do not spend the 90 Pyre finishing move without checking the target. It still deals Fire damage, but needs a listed Attribute Anomaly on the enemy to trigger Abloom. Likewise, do not forget that Phoenix can hold up to 120 Pyre.

Do not treat Wither as ordinary downtime: Phoenix cannot actively attack in that state, and her return restores the HP consumed by her Ultimate. Time your switch or quick activation around that sequence.

Do not build ordinary CRIT stats expecting them to replace the Sear effect. Check Phoenix's initial Anomaly Mastery instead, and remember that Angel in the Shell's Ether-only effect does not work on her.
